AISI 440B -- medium-C martensitic stainless. HRC 54-59. Between 440A (softer) and 440C (harder). For premium pocket knives, hunting knives and precision instruments requiring good edge retention with adequate corrosion resistance.
X39CrMo17-1 (EN 1.4112 / AISI 440B) per EN 10088. Intermediate C (0.75-0.95%) gives HRC 54-59 -- better edge retention than 440A with better corrosion and toughness than 440C. Standard for premium pocket and hunting knives and valve balls where 440C is over-hard.
