CoolantFlood coolant mandatory — Ti fire risk from hot dry chips
Chip FormationLong stringy work-hardening chips; identical precautions to Ti-6Al-4V
Tool MaterialUncoated or TiAlN carbide K10; sharp tools; low cutting speed (30-60 m/min turning)
Surface FinishRa 0.4-1.6 um
Moderate difficulty. Easier than Ti-6Al-4V but same fire hazard from chips. Constant flood coolant mandatory.
Applications
Chemical Plant
Piping, valves, reactors and heat exchangers for HNO3, chlorine, seawater and oxidising acid service.
Marine
Seawater heat exchangers, desalination condensers and offshore anodes.
Medical
Non-load-bearing implants, surgical instrument trays and dental prosthetic frameworks.
Architecture
Building cladding panels, roof tiles and facade systems (Guggenheim Bilbao).
Technical Notes
💧
Corrosion Resistance
Outstanding in oxidising environments: seawater, chlorine water, HNO3, chromic acid and body fluids. Self-healing TiO2 passive film regrows instantly. Only attacked by HF acid, concentrated reducing acids and alkali metals.
✅
Grade 2 vs Grade 4
Grade 2: Rm 345 MPa, excellent formability — standard for formed sheet and tube. Grade 4: Rm 550 MPa, less ductile — for higher-strength formed parts. Both used in chemical plant and medical; choose based on required strength.
