Description

PA6 (Polyamide 6, Nylon 6) per ISO 1874-1 is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polyamide produced by ring-opening polymerisation of caprolactam. It offers an excellent combination of mechanical strength (60-80 MPa tensile), wear resistance, chemical resistance and low coefficient of friction, making it one of the most widely used engineering plastics for mechanical components. Significant water absorption (2.5-3.5% equilibrium) reduces modulus and strength when wet β€” an important design consideration. Available as unfilled, glass-filled, MoS2-filled and lubricated grades.

Heat Treatment
Drying (mandatory before processing)
Temperature:80Β°C – 90Β°C
Medium:Circulating air oven
Duration:4-6 h
Cooling:Cool in sealed bag
Hardness After:Moisture <0.20%
MANDATORY before injection moulding. PA6 is highly hygroscopic. Moisture causes hydrolytic degradation and surface defects.
Conditioning (after machining)
Temperature:20Β°C – 23Β°C
Medium:Water bath or humidity chamber
Duration:24-96 h
Cooling:Humidity-controlled
Hardness After:Equilibrium properties
Parts reach dimensional and mechanical equilibrium. Important for precision parts β€” dimensions change significantly during conditioning.
Sterilisation (medical parts)
Temperature:121Β°C – 134Β°C
Medium:Autoclave (steam)
Duration:15-30 min per cycle
Cooling:Cool to room temp
Hardness After:Minor colour change only
Standard steam sterilisation compatible. Repeated cycles may reduce impact toughness.

Excellent machinability. Machine to near-final dimension then condition (soak) before final cuts as dimensions change with moisture uptake. GF30 is abrasive β€” use carbide only.

Technical Notes
⚠️
Water Absorption
PA6 absorbs 2.5-3.5% water at 50% RH and up to 9% when saturated. This SIGNIFICANTLY reduces modulus (~30-40%) and dimensions change. Always design with wet equilibrium properties for outdoor or high-humidity applications. Dimension parts in conditioned state.
βœ…
vs PA66
PA6 has lower melting point (215 C vs 265 C for PA66) giving better melt flow and lower moulding temperature β€” better for complex moulds. PA66 has higher stiffness and better heat resistance. For machined parts (stock shapes), PA6 is more common in Europe. For injection moulding, PA66 dominates in automotive.
βœ…
Glass-Filled (GF30)
PA6-GF30 (30% glass fibre) increases tensile strength to 140-180 MPa, stiffness to 9-10 GPa and HDT to 200 C. Significantly reduces water absorption effect. Standard for structural automotive under-hood components. Note: glass fibres cause anisotropy in moulded parts and are abrasive to tools.
πŸ’§
Chemical Resistance
Good resistance to hydrocarbons, oils, greases, ketones and most solvents. NOT resistant to: strong acids, phenols, oxidising acids (HNO3) and formic acid. Check specific chemical resistance tables for design.

Welding Plastics
PA6 parts can be joined by: ultrasonic welding, vibration welding, hot plate welding, and adhesive bonding (two-component epoxy or cyanoacrylate on dried surfaces). UV/solvent bonding NOT recommended β€” PA6 is resistant to most solvents.
Stress-Strain β€” PA6 Unfilled (DAM vs Wet)

Schematic stress-strain for PA6 unfilled: dry as moulded (DAM) vs water-saturated. Note dramatic ductility increase and strength decrease when wet.
