Description

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) per ISO 2580-1 is an amorphous terpolymer combining stiffness (A-S), toughness (B) and processability. Excellent surface finish and electroplatability make it the dominant material for consumer electronics housings, automotive interior trim and appliances. Also the most widely used FDM 3D printing filament material. Continuous service to 80-90 C (unfilled).

Medium:Air oven
Duration:1-2 h
Cooling:Slow cool
Hardness After:Stress relief
For precision machined parts or parts in contact with solvents.

Technical Notes
βœ…
ABS vs PC
ABS: lower cost, better surface finish, better machining, lower impact than PC, poor outdoor durability. PC: 250x better impact, UV stable, higher service temp. ABS+PC blends: combine advantages. For indoor housings: ABS. For safety glazing: PC.
⚠️
UV Degradation
Standard ABS yellows and embrittles rapidly outdoors (12-18 months). Always specify UV-stabilised grade for outdoor applications. ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is the UV-stable alternative with similar properties.
βœ…
Electroplating
ABS is the only standard engineering plastic that electroplates easily. The butadiene rubber phase is selectively etched by chromic acid, creating mechanical anchor points for the copper/nickel/chrome plating layer.

ABS vs PC/ABS vs PC
ABS: cheapest, easiest to process, lower impact at low temp (<-10 C), lower HDT (80 C). PC/ABS: better low-temp impact, better HDT (110 C), higher cost. PC: best impact, HDT 130 C, hardest to process. For most general-purpose housings: ABS. For automotive interiors and electronics: PC/ABS.

LEGO and ABS
LEGO has used ABS since 1963 because it provides the precise dimensional tolerances needed for brick-to-brick clutch force, combined with the right balance of stiffness and toughness. ABS is so synonymous with LEGO that the colour and translucent variants are simply called Lego colours in the plastics industry.
