Description

PEI (Polyetherimide) per ISO 15103 is an amorphous high-performance thermoplastic developed by GE (now SABIC) under the trade name Ultem. Outstanding combination of: high continuous service temperature (170 C), inherent UL94 V-0 flame retardance with low smoke/toxicity, FDA biocompatibility and excellent mechanical and electrical properties. Cost is 5-10x PA6 β€” significantly less than PEEK while offering 80% of PEEK performance.

Heat Treatment
Drying (mandatory)
Temperature:150Β°C – 165Β°C
Medium:Circulating air oven (vacuum preferred)
Duration:4-6 h
Cooling:Sealed bag
Hardness After:Moisture <0.05%
MANDATORY. PEI is hygroscopic and degrades at melt temp if wet.
Annealing (machined parts)
Temperature:150Β°C – 165Β°C
Medium:Circulating air oven
Duration:2-4 h
Cooling:Slow cool at 2-3 C/min
Hardness After:Stress relief; improves dim stability
Strongly recommended for precision parts and parts in chemical/solvent contact.
Sterilisation (medical)
Temperature:121Β°C – 134Β°C
Medium:Autoclave (steam) β€” repeated cycles
Duration:20 min
Cooling:Cool
Hardness After:No degradation
Withstands thousands of autoclave cycles β€” key advantage for reusable medical instruments.

Good machinability in unfilled grade. GF30 is highly abrasive β€” carbide/PCD only.
Applications
Aerospace Interiors
Seat components, overhead bin latches, armrests, lighting covers and galley equipment β€” FAR 25.853 compliant.
Medical
Reusable surgical instrument handles, sterilisation trays, medical device housings and laboratory equipment.
Electrical
Connector bodies, relay housings and PCB spacers requiring V-0 flame retardance.
Semiconductor
Wafer handling fixtures, test sockets and process chamber components (lower cost than PEEK).
Technical Notes
βœ…
PEI vs PEEK
PEI (Ultem): 170 C HDT, V-0 FR, lower cost (5-10x PA6). PEEK: 250 C HDT, V-0 FR, 30x PA6 cost. Use PEI when PEEK temperature capability is not needed β€” significant cost saving. PEI also has better clarity and FAR fire compliance.
βœ…
Ultem 1010 vs 9085
Ultem 1010 is FDA-compliant for food and biocompatible. Ultem 9085 is the leading FDM aerospace filament (certified for F/A-18 and commercial aircraft printed parts). Both are FAR 25.853 compliant.
πŸ’§
Chemical Resistance
Good resistance to alcohols, hydrocarbons, dilute acids and bases. NOT resistant to: halogenated solvents (methylene chloride, chloroform), concentrated strong acids and aromatic solvents.
